A new women’s running group has been set up in Sheffield

‘Run for Fun’ is a women’s running club of all abilities in Sheffield to provide a ‘safe space’ for
girls to run at their own pace without feeling intimidated.

Libby Holmes, the creator of the group, is a PhD student studying biophysics at the University of
Sheffield.

She said: “I’ve never personally been part of a running club because I feel like I can quite often
intimidating, especially when you’re just starting out.

“That’s why I wanted to create this group, to allow people to run at their own pace, without any
fear of judgment.”

Ms Holmes has run several half marathons herself and is due to run another this Sunday,
after starting his running journey in 2022.

She started the group at the beginning of April and since then has organized 3 weekly group runs of
different lengths, varying between 3-5km.

She says voter turnout in caucus races has “exponentially increased” with the first round having 25
the ladies take part and the most recent race on Sunday reached 100 new starters.

The Run for Fun Sheffield Instagram page has amassed over 1,800 followers in its first
month, allowing him to advertise the group and increase his social presence.

According to the page, Libby says “We don’t focus on the beat, we focus on good vibes and how to get there
know each other.”

The group has also become a place for women to meet other people of similar ages and
interests

After each run, Libby organizes a ‘coffee and chat’ at the Thyme cafe in Broomhill, which are
usually closed on Sundays, but they opened the cafe just for runners to enjoy a coffee
then.

Ms Holmes said: “I wanted to start the group just to meet girls my age and create a common group
interest, and I can see that many girls in the group have also made friends, which is so wonderful for
see.

“A lot of people come alone and I’ve seen them exchange contact details with other runners, so
I’m glad this has become a little community for girls to run around and make friends at the same time
time.”

Details for each run are posted on the WhatsApp group, which can be accessed via Run
for Fun Sheffield Instagram page.
