Feyenoord goalkeeping coach Jyri Nieminen has revealed he considered joining Arne Slot at Liverpool this summer – but admitted he is now likely to stay in Rotterdam for the 2024/25 season.

Reds owners Fenway Sports Group recently announced the appointment of a global goalkeeping boss, Hans Leitert, whose first task was to find replacements for first-team coaches John Achterberg and Jack Robinson, who left the club at the end of the game. season.




Nieminen, 36, has been part of Feyenoord’s set-up under Slot since July 2023 and it has been reported that he could move to Merseyside this summer to succeed Achterberg. However, the Finn has now admitted he expects to stay in Holland for the upcoming campaign.

“The Liverpool thing was there and of course I was thinking about it,” Nieminen told Finish Apu magazine. “With a very high probability, I will continue with Feyenoord next season as well. The situation will change if it changes.”

Nieminen enjoyed a five-year professional career in his native Finland before retiring in 2012 and starting his coaching career. In the last 11 years, he has worked in Estonia, Qatar, America, South Africa and the Netherlands.

Nieminen has two years left on his current contract with the 2022 Eredivisie champions.
