June: University’s ‘outstanding’ staff shine at Bristol Teaching Awards | News and features

University of Bristol staff have been commended for their ‘brilliant and wonderful teaching’ at the 2024 Bristol Teaching Awards.

Nearly 200 people filled the Great Hall of the Wills Memorial Building on Wednesday to hear dozens of moving excerpts from some of the 1,069 nominations, most of which were made by students.

One student said the tutor made them feel “appreciated, heard and understood” and another praised his teacher’s “passionate and enthusiastic teaching”.

Prof Tansy Jessop, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students, thanked staff and emphasized that students were increasingly co-creating the university curriculum.

And that co-creation was showcased at the Awards, the event being a collaboration between the Bristol Institute for Learning and Teaching (BILT) and Bristol SU.

Students announced many of the award winners and there were performances from salsa, pantomime and music societies. The University Knitting Society created colorful woolen flowers for the tables.

Masters of Ceremonies were Bristol SU Undergraduate Studies Officer Nicole Antoine and Union Affairs Officer Adam Michael. Nicole praised the staff for their “impact on the university community”.

Thanking all staff at Bristol, Assistant Vice-Chancellor and Prof Judith Squires said the Bristol Teaching Awards ‘just go from strength to strength’, adding: ‘Every year we get to celebrate such talent across the organization our and there are always innovations. – never had knitted flowers, salsa and pantomime before!

“A huge congratulations. It’s great to be recognized by your peers and students as you go above and beyond to do something exceptional. Everyone did an amazing job just to be nominated.”

In addition to teachers, the 19 awards celebrated personal tutors, research supervisors, support teams and more. Each year, one of the winners is chosen to receive the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for their outstanding contribution to education.

This year, Dr Andy Flack, Senior Lecturer in Modern and Environmental History, was the worthy winner. It also won in the category “Award for Inspirational and Innovative Teaching – Faculty of Arts”.

Andy said winning the award was “amazing, very exciting and really humbling”.

He added: “I have been teaching for about 10 years now and I have always valued the relationships I build with my students. I am proud of what I have achieved and what they (the students) have achieved.

“I would also like to acknowledge my colleagues: the School of Humanities is very close-knit. We encourage each other in our teaching and lift each other up.”

Winners received a framed certificate and seeds from a wildflower meadow planted in their honor in the Royal Fort Gardens.

There was a special award for Santi Rodriguez, associate professor of medical education, who sadly passed away earlier this year. His work and research were praised and he was described by colleagues as “gentle and kind” with a “deep compassion for others”. The award was received posthumously by his wife.
