A fire-damaged Charlestown hotel and pub is set to reopen

A hotel and pub damaged in a fire is to fully reopen later this month. The Pier House and Harbor Beer House overlooking Charlestown Harbor were badly damaged in a fire in January 2023.

A large fire engulfed the historic property, leaving most of the building badly damaged. The fire was so large that eight engines responded with 54 firefighters from 10 different crews battling to control the flames. Fortunately, all guests and staff were safely evacuated and no one was injured in the incident.

Later in the year, St Austell Brewery, which owns the property, announced that the front bar, which had suffered the least damage, would partially reopen. The independent brewer has now announced a full reopening date for both locations in time for the tourist season.

Helen Sprason, area manager for St Austell Brewery, said: “It has been amazing to watch the Pier House transform over the months to restore the pub to its former glory and then some.

“We have sensitively exposed the history of the building, showing the grandeur of the structure and how it has been used over the years. There will be a dedicated restaurant area, plenty of cozy nooks to sit and watch the world go by and a wonderful new bar fully stocked with our range of award-winning beers.

“The 23 rooms are also getting a major makeover, with the introduction of new textures and materials to reflect the pub’s coastal surroundings. We can’t wait for everyone to come and experience Pier House again.”
