The Sheffield Wednesday star dominated two statistics during Thursday’s international clash

Di’Shon Bernard and Jamaica kicked off a busy summer of soccer with a CONCACAF World Cup qualifier against the Dominican Republic on Thursday.

Jamaica hosted the Dominican Republic at Independence Park in Kingston on Thursday in the first of several games for Bernard and the Reggae Boys this summer.

Jamaica won the match 1-0 and play the second leg against the Dominican Republic on Sunday before starting their Copa America campaign.

Di’Shon Bernard’s nation are in Group B alongside Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela, with their first game against Mexico on June 23.

So Jamaica and Iceland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson will use these games against the Dominican Republic as a bit of a warm-up for their Copa America campaign.

And Bernard can use this summer’s internationals as a chance to showcase himself, with Sheffield Wednesday’s contract expiring at the end of this month.

How Sheffield Wednesday ace Di’Shon Bernard fared against the Dominican Republic

Jamaica won the game 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal by Clermont’s Shamar Nicholson.

The Jamaica Observer gave Bernard a rating of 6.5/10, adding that Bernard “wasn’t under too much pressure from the Dominican Republic but, like his defensive colleagues, was good when he needed to be”.

According to Sofascore, Bernard made 6 defensive tackles in the game (joint second of any Jamaican player), with 2 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 clearance and 1 block.

Bernard had the most touches of anyone on the pitch (71), while also making 15 more accurate passes than anyone (52 in total with 85% accuracy).

The former Manchester United man also completed 5/11 long balls, also winning 3/5 duels.

Can Sheffield Wednesday keep hold of Di’Shon Bernard this summer?

After his impressive 2023/24 campaign and given that there is reported interest in the 23-year-old, keeping him in S6 still looks quite unlikely.

And if he can show his full-back qualities on the international stage this summer, then he will only attract more suitors.

The way Jamaica play seems to put Bernard on the ball quite a bit, perhaps more than when he plays for Sheffield Wednesday.

And the passing stats against the Dominican Republic, albeit weaker opposition, showed Bernard’s ability to pass out from the back.

That, and his ability to win battles on the ground and in the air and also take the ball forward, make him a very complete defender with huge potential.

Bernard could secure a very good move this summer, perhaps to a club at the top of the Championship or a top league in Europe.

Either way, it looks like a very interesting summer for Bernard and Jamaica.
