Leeds United and West Brom go head to head for Smith

Leeds United and West Brom are interested in St Pauli defender Eric Smith, according to Sportbladet.

Leeds United are gearing up for another season in the Championship after losing the play-off final to Southampton.

West Brom also managed to finish in the top six, but Carlos Corberan’s side lost in the semi-final to Saints.

Both clubs will have aspirations of a return to the Premier League in the upcoming campaign. However, it will not be an easy ask and their summer business is crucial.

Smith, 27, made 26 Bundesliga 2 appearances for St Pauli last season. His club won the German second division and scored once and assisted three more in the process.

The defensive midfielder can also play in central defense and has now spent two seasons in Germany after joining from KAA Gent in 2021.

The Swedish midfielder attracted the attention of a number of clubs last season, with Leeds United and West Brom both interested in the 27-year-old.

A statement of intent

Smith proved himself at a good level in Germany, while playing top-level football in Sweden and Belgium throughout his career.

He could easily play in the Bundesliga for St Pauli next season, but he might make the switch to England instead.

Smith still has a year left on his contract in Germany and given their recent promotion, St Pauli will likely want to keep him this season. However, if either Daniel Farke or Corberan’s sides could offer the right amount, a deal could be done this summer.

Exactly what they need

Leeds United could be forced to sell several of their key players this summer after failing to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

But, they will need to replace those who are leaving and someone like Smith who probably won’t break the bank would be a very smart piece of business for any Championship club.

The experienced defender obviously knows what it takes to get promoted, so his presence in either dressing room could be a big boost this season.

Farke and Corberan will both be keen to get the summer window and subsequently the 2024/25 season off to a good start. Both clubs should once again be in contention for a top-six finish as a minimum, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see at least one of them promoted this time around.
