Leeds United and West Brom ‘prepared to buy’ 27-year-old – Club ‘reluctant to offload’ player

Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion are in the picture to sign Eric Smith from FC St. Pauli in the summer window, according to a report from Sweden.

The centre-back initially joined the German club on loan from KAA Gent in January 2021 and made his stay there permanent later that year.

Smith was a regular for St. Pauli and contributed eight goals (two goals and six assists) in 30 games in the recently concluded season.

Leeds and West Brom are showing interest in the 27-year-old, according to Aftonbladet, as reported by Fotbollskanalen.

It is claimed that the two English clubs are “ready to buy” the Swede in the next window. The report makes no mention of the fee the Whites or Baggies could offer the defender.

The player has one year left on his current contract, with an option to extend for a further year. St. Pauli have secured promotion to the Bundesliga and are “reluctant to release him”. This would make it difficult for Leeds and West Brom to secure his services.

In addition to the Championship duo, 1. FSV Mainz 05 and VfB Stuttgart are reportedly interested in Smith.
