Rivals confirm Sheffield Wednesday transfer target to become free agent

A key transfer target for Sheffield Wednesday will become a free agent this summer, it has now been confirmed.

Sheffield Wednesday could soon have their first signing of the summer over the line, with goalkeeper Ben Hamer set to arrive.

The 36-year-old was recently released by Watford and his seemingly imminent arrival at Hillsborough means Cameron Dawson looks set to leave.

The free agent market may be one the Owls focus heavily on this summer; with new contracts for Danny Rohl, Barry Bannan, Liam Palmer and possibly more, it could mean that transfer resources are stretched thin.

But expect Dejphon Chansiri to still spend money on one or two suitable players this summer, with names like Ike Ugbo wanted back at Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent basis.

Another name that Rohl wants to return to this summer is Ian Poveda.

Leeds United confirm the release of Ian Poveda

Poveda, 24, won the hearts of Sheffield Wednesday fans during a loan spell in the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

He picked up an assist in 10 league appearances and played a key role in the Owls’ eventual 20th-place finish under Rohl.

There is widespread interest in the Colombian, with Sheffield Wednesday rivaled by the likes of Burnley, Luton Town and Sunderland.

On Friday, Leeds United released their retained list, officially confirming that Poveda will become a free agent on July 1.

Should Sheffield Wednesday pursue the transfer of Ian Poveda

Poveda’s return would surely delight Wednesday fans; not only did he provide quality and energy in the final third, but he was also very interesting to watch.

The only concern is his fitness. He missed the final five games of the season due to injury, injuries that plagued his later years in the game.

If he does come in, Rohl will surely anticipate Poveda spending some time on the sidelines next season and will want other interiors of similar quality.

Whether this would be affordable for the Owls remains to be seen; they may have to choose between Poveda and Karamoko Dembele, who is another name linked.

But if Poveda returns on a free transfer this summer then overall he would be a strong signing for Sheffield Wednesday.
