Birmingham Northfield 2024 General Election Candidates

On July 4, voters will head to the polls to decide who will become the next prime minister. Both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer will spend the next few weeks outlining why they are the right person for the job on immigration, the cost of living crisis, the NHS and key environmental issues to win over voters.

Birmingham Northfield is a place to watch on the 4th of July, with recent polls suggesting a Tory-to-Labour swing. In 2019, the Tories managed to win the seat and turn Northfield blue for the first time in 27 years – but Tory candidate Gary Sambrook will face an uphill battle to keep his seat.

There are eight candidates seeking election in Birmingham Northfield. Local MPs represent their constituents in Parliament and vote on laws that affect us all.

Who is the Conservative candidate for Birmingham Northfield?

The Tory candidate is Gary Sambrook, who is hoping to win a second election this year after tackling “decades of neglect” in Northfield. Sambrook has previously worked on school rebuilding projects but came under fire in 2020 after voting against extending free school meals for children in 2020.

In the run-up to the election, Sambrook also criticized Labour-led Birmingham City Council’s budget cuts and campaigned to “save” weekly rubbish collections as well as the area’s libraries. With the Tories languishing in the polls, Sambrook is one of the candidates pollsters believe could be “wiped out” in a Labor landslide.

Who is the Labor candidate for Birmingham Northfield?

The Labor candidate for Northfield is Laurence Turner. Mr Turner worked for the GMB union and also worked closely with former Labor MP for the area, Richard Burden, when Burden was a shadow minister.

Turner wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “It’s a privilege to represent Northfield Labor and fight for change after 14 years of Tory failure. “I will work hard every day to fulfill the work plan and repay the faith that has been shown in me.”
