Leeds in talks to keep out-of-contract duo Liam Cooper and Jamie Shackleton

Both players’ current deals expire this summer and Cooper’s future in particular has come under the spotlight in recent months.

The 32-year-old, in Scotland’s Euro 2024 squad, has spent the last 10 years at Leeds, seven of them as skipper, and made 284 appearances in all competitions, but made just eight Championship starts last season.

Versatile midfielder Shackleton made just seven league starts as Leeds’ bid for a direct return to the Premier League under head coach Daniel Farke was ended by Southampton in the play-off final.

Leeds confirmed on Friday that new contract talks were underway for both players as they released their retained list for next season.

Stuart Dallas, who announced his retirement last month after missing two years through injury, Luke Ayling and Ian Poveda are among the 11 players set to leave Elland Road.

Right-back Sam Byram has triggered a one-year extension clause in his contract, while Harry Christy, Cody Drameh, Joseph Snowdon and Luca Thomas have been offered new deals, Leeds said.

The Whites have also confirmed that loan trio Joe Rodon, Jaidon Anthony and Connor Roberts have returned to Tottenham, Bournemouth and Burnley respectively.

It has been reported that Leeds are keen to keep hold of Wales midfielder Rodon, 26, and it remains to be seen whether he returns later this summer, either for a second loan spell or a permanent deal.

Six other players who left Leeds on loan after relegation at the end of 2022-23 will return to Elland Road before settling their futures.

Jack Harrison (Everton), Marc Roca (Real Betis), Brenden Aaronson (Union Berlin), Diego Llorente, Rasmus Kristensen (both Roma) and Max Wober (Borussia Monchengladbach) spent last season on loan after activating release clauses, but currently remain at Leeds players.
