You could say the SD&G Historical Society’s 1784 event has been a long time coming — in that our area is “Where Ontario Began,” which happens to be the official slogan of the SDG Counties — and in the immense planning that went into the event, which was first announced last November.

“We’re thrilled it’s finally happening,” said the Cornwall Community Museumcurator and principal administrator Brent Whitford on Friday, shortly after the opening of the heritage village and museum. “Today is great with school tours. We’re taking 12 groups of students in total… from all (local) school boards… they’re 7th and 8th graders… they’re learning quite a lot today.”

“The students really enjoyed the interactivity of everyone,” she said as the students explored the booths inside the heritage village tent, escaping the morning rain. These booths include representation from the side Lost Villages Historical Society, Glengarry Pioneer Museum, Filles du Roi and many other local organizations.

“I think they were a little surprised at first, thinking they might not be interested. But looking at the artifacts, the lessons that I teach in 7th and 8th grade, some of those key words come up like ‘Loyalists’… a lot of our students are hands-on learners, so it’s really great for They.”

Over 100 living historians were expected to set up camp in the park Friday afternoon. Visitors are encouraged to step back in time and ask living historians what it’s like to live and survive in New Johnston and learn the stories of why people left their homes to come here.

After the fun-filled day on Friday, the heritage village, living history camp and open museum will open at 9.30am on Saturday, running throughout the day to offer unique talks. The official ceremony will start at 12:30, followed by the disembarkation of the loyalists and the draw at 13:00.

The evening concert at 7pm will close the day at the bandshell. Sunday, apthe plowing service at the church will start at 10 a.m. and the military tactical maneuvers will take place at 1 p.m.

Whether you come to learn more about your ancestors and the area’s past, or you want to hear from some of the people who can tell those stories, Lamoureux Park is the place to be,” said a release from the SD&G Historical Society.
