Cornwall recorded their first home win of the season, beating bottom-placed Newcastle Thunder 30-6 in League One.

Jake Anderson gave the Thunder a 10th-minute lead, but David Weetman leveled for his side 15 minutes later as the teams went in at half-time at 6-6.

Mike Abbott’s side hit Newcastle after the break as they ran in four more tries – Bailey Black was the first to go over a minute after the restart.

Cameron Brown scored twice in a seven minute period before Harry Boots completed the scoring with 11 minutes remaining.

The win was Cornwall’s second of the season and saw them second from the bottom of League One, four points behind winless Newcastle.

Cornwall are two points clear of North Wales Crusaders, who have played a game less.

“I thought both teams were really bad in the first half – if either team pulls that off and just completes at a higher rate, they put up more points, but we didn’t,” said the head coach of Cornwall, Abbott, for BBC Radio Cornwall.

“We sat the guys out at halftime, talked about the game plan we talked about in the second half, executed it.

“One of our tries was amazing but it wasn’t the most spectacular rugby we’ve played but it was effective and we just didn’t stray from it and we kept at it and I don’t think they -I gave. a sniff in the second half.”
