A simple and inexpensive trick using household items will keep your bin smelling fresh and clean

Many people know the feeling when your home has an odor that you just can’t get rid of. While there can be a number of reasons for this – from pets to the bathroom – a key issue can be the litter box.

Whether it’s the kitchen bin inside or the main bin outside, the accumulation of waste can lead to odors. It could be when you put something in the basket, such as eggs or vegetables, which will start to smell after a few days.

Although you could throw it out, if the bag isn’t full yet, it’s a waste of plastic. But there is something you can do to keep the stench under control. And using this trick can keep your trash smelling fresh until it’s time to take it out.

Apartment Therapy says you can soak cotton balls in essential oils and throw them in the trash. Make sure you put it under the trash bag so it doesn’t mix with the waste, the Express reports.

When it comes to which essential oils to use, there is a whole range that can mask different odors in waste. And some come with other benefits as well as deodorizing.

Lemongrass oil naturally balances unpleasant odors, while tea tree oil and citrus oils can help clean bacteria from your litter box. Meanwhile, peppermint oil can keep pests like rats and mice at bay, making it especially useful with outdoor trash cans. And neem oil can keep insects away.

All you have to do is throw the cotton in the bin when you change the bag. If it starts to smell as it gets fuller, you can throw in another one and that should mask the stench.

Pet owners should remember that some essential oils can be harmful to pets. If you have dogs that are likely to rummage through trash cans, it is advisable to avoid using tea tree, peppermint, and citrus oils, among others.
