Subaru 4×4 stuck on Constantine Beach heralds silly season

You may have wondered when the unofficial start of the tourist season will be – especially since the weather isn’t much of an indicator of when it’s summer. Well, fear not, now it is.

No tourist season in Cornwall goes by without at least one person driving onto a sandy beach and getting stuck. Well, we have one, which means silly season is now truly underway. This silver Subaru Forester did all that when it was driven on Constantine Beach in Seven Bays, near Padstow, and despite being a four-wheel drive car, it got stuck in the soft sand.

An onlooker who filmed the couple’s struggle to get out of their misery told CornwallLive: ‘The silly season has begun. Saw this car driving down Constantine Beach last night. No one at the beach helped to get her off the sand, everyone just stood up. and I watched because it shouldn’t be there anyway.”

The incident took place on Thursday (June 6) at 8:46 p.m. One of the onlookers said the female passenger tried to move sand with her foot, but it made no difference, so the driver kept going back and forth. In the video you can watch at the top of this article, the car appears to be running, but crashes again.

The driver can be seen turning the car as if to gain an extra length of beach to launch himself out of the sand, only to drop back into the soft sand and get stuck – again. The video shows a couple walking past in awe, while a group of beachgoers sit on a nearby dune and take it all in. After about 20 minutes of trying, the driver was finally able to get out.

In the video our reader sent us, you can see a woman standing in front of the driver’s window, gesticulating and having what appears to be an argument with the driver, while the people filming the scene provide commentary.

Our reader sent us some videos of the incident. In one video, a woman can be heard saying, “It’s never a good idea to drive your car on the beach.” Another person can be heard saying: “What the to**er.” Others just chuckle and enjoy the couple’s misfortune rather uncharitably.

Finally, the bearded driver of the Subaru manages to turn the car around before revving it up and gaining speed out of the sand and onto the beach.

The onlooker added: “She definitely got herself into a pickle and made for entertainment for all to watch. The exit was a bit inconsiderate, flying past people who were lounging around and enjoying the evening.”

On this occasion there was no loss of the vehicle due to any suitcase. No rescue services or a tractor had to be deployed to get the car out of the sand, and no one was hurt except for someone’s pride, perhaps.

But anyone who lives here will know or have seen other incidents where cars left on beaches have met a worse fate than this Subaru.

Over the years, we’ve almost lost count of the number of occasions when vehicles from BMWs to DPD vans have become stuck in the sand or even lost at sea. We’ve seen tractor rescues, an ice cream van rolling down the beach, cars becoming completely submerged – and lots of tears and hand-on-hip positions as people watch helplessly as it all unfolds.
