Gardening expert reveals two ‘brilliant’ ways to get rid of snails for good

Say goodbye to pesky slugs with these two ingenious methods. Dealing with slugs can be a real headache for gardeners, especially when they target your prized plants.

However, one gardening enthusiast has shared two unexpected and all-natural tactics to banish these slimy creatures once and for all, reports the Manchester Evening News. On TikTok, @notmrspock_fact said: “Snail trouble huh? Tired of using snail pellets? That’s what I do. I’ve had problems with slugs on my dahlias for years and look at them now, all the leaves are actually perfect because I use these – chives!”

It turns out that snails have an aversion to anything related to onions, so planting their botanical cousins like chives and leeks near vulnerable plants can act as a repellent. This advice is also supported by TV gardening expert James Wong, who notes that snails are just one of many insects that loathe the chemical emitted by these plants.

The key substance here is ‘Allicin’, which not only kills harmful microbes, but also gives onions their distinct, pungent flavor. @notmrspock_fact said: “I can – I can smell them from here. I hate chives, so plant them with your plants.”

For those especially worried about snails nibbling on their lupins, the gardener shared a nifty trick. It consists of making a garlic spray by mixing two crushed cloves of garlic with a pint of water. Garlic, like onions, contains allicin which is known to repel slugs.

The green-fingered guru said: “Give (plants) a spray – snails hate garlic! Facts.”

The gardening hack has caught the attention of TikTok users, with many advocating its effectiveness. One said: “I put garlic around the garden bed and it helped a lot. I never thought about garlic water.” A second said: “Great idea! I’m using garlic stink water!”
