Manchester United take the “Mason Greenwood contract decision”, it is a very sensible move

A decision on Mason Greenwood’s future awaits Manchester United this summer and the club have bought themselves some extra time.

Manchester United made a real mess of the Mason Greenwood situation last summer despite having months to prepare.

United tried to bring Greenwood back into the first team before a very public outcry led to calls for Richard Arnold to resign. He left months later.

Greenwood was arrested and charged in 2021 with several crimes. These were later abandoned by the CPS.

United agreed to loan Greenwood on deadline day last summer to Spanish side Getafe, where he has resumed his football career.

Mason Greenwood contract option

Mason Greenwood is still an asset for Manchester United, at least financially. There are few realistic prospects of him playing for the club again.

Greenwood is happy in Spain and has attracted interest from Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

Manchester United will have a limited transfer budget this summer, especially if the team miss out on European football.

HITC reports Manchester United have made the decision to trigger Mason Greenwood’s contract option.

His deal was set to expire in the summer of 2025 and now runs until June 2026.

This allows Manchester United greater leverage in transfer negotiations as the club look to sell Greenwood for the highest possible fee.

Getafe wants a loan for another year

Getafe want to sign Greenwood on loan for another year. This could be an option if Manchester United do not receive the offers the club are looking for this summer.

Greenwood has done well in Spain, scoring eight La Liga goals and six assists, plus two goals in the Copa del Rey. It’s a decent return to a high level considering he’s been out for 18 months.

The question is, how drastically could Greenwood improve next season as he grows more established in Spain with a full pre-season behind him?

If Greenwood were to double his production and score 20 goals next season, Manchester United would be looking at a jackpot in 2025.

This new contract extension makes that possible, should the club not receive the offers they want this summer and are not desperate enough to accept a lower offer.
