Almost 100 illegal drivers have been caught in a West Yorkshire police crackdown

Kirklees Police have dealt with almost a hundred illegal drivers in just one month.

West Yorkshire Police said officers also seized eight cars as they worked to make roads in the area safer. The force’s road policing unit urged Kirklees residents to report dangerous driving spots in the community. In May, police in Dewsbury, Mirfield and Batley and Spen took out 96 motorists for problems including speeding and not wearing seat belts.

Officers also dealt with drivers seen driving without due care and attention and using a mobile phone. A stolen car was impounded and its driver arrested.

It’s not the first time cops have dealt with bad driving in the area. In North Kirklees in February and March, during his Operation Trimburg patrols, officers recovered 20 vehicles and three people were arrested for drink and/or drug driving. Four were arrested for vehicle theft and one for dangerous driving. A suspect was also arrested on a warrant after being caught behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Operation Trimburg itself is focused on reducing #fatal5 crime, identified as the leading cause of serious and fatal road accidents. They are speeding, not wearing a seat belt, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, using a mobile phone and careless driving.

“West Yorkshire Police also remains committed to Vision Zero, a road safety target set with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries, while increasing safe, healthy and fair mobility for all in West Yorkshire’.
