Coventry chippy with ‘huge portions’ that ‘compared to none’

A Coventry chippy has been described as “the best chippy around” with “big portions”. Readers recently voted St George’s Plaice in Canley as the top place to get the iconic British staple.

The takeaway was also hailed as one of the best in the country with a Blue Ribbon Good Food Award 2023. Owner Satty Thandi said that when he bought the shop in 2021, it was “up and coming” and working hard ” day and night” to reach the top.

As well as serving traditional fish and chips, St George’s Plaice also offers kebabs, burgers, fagggots, pies, sausages, southern fried chicken, children’s food and ice cream. A regular cod is priced at £9.49, while a regular haddock is £9.29, with a small cod at £6.99.

Reviewers praised the chippy for offering “fresh fish cooked to order” alongside “excellent service”. Chippy has a 4.3 star rating on Google reviews and also holds a 4.6 out of 5 on Just Eat and a 4.7 rating on Uber Eats.

Arpan Guha said: “Could be called one of the best chip shops in Coventry – if not the best! The cleaning was very good. The food is fresh, large quantity and excellent value for money.

“Their naan with mixed kebab is something you might try as the meat was quite juicy. The fish and chips is a reliable home run that never disappoints.”

“The food is always hot and the portions are well sized. I can always count on a kebab sandwich or two the next day. The chips are always soft and crispy and the clams are always crisp and never stale.”

Simran Sandhu added: “Some of the best food I’ve had from a fish and chip shop. The fish was amazing as were the chips.

“The chicken tikka is also a must try. It was delicious.”
