The doctor says “you should never go more than a few days” without washing your hair

Wash day can often be a huge chore, but a doctor has warned that you shouldn’t go more than a few days without washing your hair. This is apparently due to potentially unpleasant consequences.

Dr. Jenny Liu, a board-certified dermatologist, took to TikTok to share how certain habits could be damaging to hair health. She captioned her video with the statement “scalp care is skin care,” reports the Mirror.

Dr. Liu then revealed the grim reason why you should “never go more than a few days” without washing your hair, despite the fact that many people try to “train” their hair not to get greasy. She revealed that it’s “completely a myth that our hair and scalp just cleans itself”.

She said: “We know that sebum, dead skin build-up, all of these basically contribute to Malassezia yeast overgrowth (a fungal skin condition) which can lead to dandruff as well as inflammation. Just even the sebum itself that sits on our scalp. it causes oxidative stress, and inflammation is not a healthy environment for hair growth.”

Dr Liu said those suffering from hair loss should “keep up with scalp health to maximize hair growth”. However, she admitted that how often you wash your hair is “personal” and “depends on scalp type” and “lifestyle.”

She advises that if you have an oilier scalp or engage in regular sweat-inducing exercise, you’ll need to wash your hair “frequently”. Dr. Lui says this should be done maybe every other day or even daily, while it should be done less often if your scalp is dry.

She also revealed that she will “never use an anti-dandruff shampoo every day” as it can be “very drying on your scalp and hair”, leading to “dry and frizzy” hair. It also disrupts the moisture barrier, which “doesn’t help with dandruff either.” If you wash your hair daily, Dr. Liu advises using an anti-dandruff shampoo two to three times a week, leaving it on the scalp for five minutes before rinsing.
