Leeds United’s ‘outstanding’ player was so poor in the play-off final that he may have put off a few suitors

Leeds United now had almost two weeks to lose in the play-off final against Southampton.

The Whites were subjected to a second consecutive spell of Championship football following a 1-0 defeat at Wembley which opened the door to a number of player exits.

Unlike the semi-final second leg against Norwich City, Leeds’ main players simply failed to rise to the occasion. It wasn’t until Dan James hit the crossbar that the Whites looked dangerous.

Following the loss, several of Leeds’ key men have been tipped for departures as they look to raise funds to stay within the EFL’s PSR constraints.

Paraag Marathe has admitted that some sales will be made, with Crysencio Summerville, Willy Gnonto, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter leaving.

Transfer the inside scoop on Crysencio Summerville’s Leeds future

LeedsUnited.News spoke exclusively to transfer insider Graeme Bailey earlier this week about numerous topics surrounding Leeds ahead of the summer.

Gretar Steinsson’s interest in upcoming free agent Daniel Jebbison was among them, as was the potential for Brenden Aaronson to return to Elland Road.

The futures of Summerville, Rutter and Gnonto were also discussed, with Bailey suggesting the latter should actually be offered a new deal to stay.

Unfortunately, the three were among those who fall into the Wembley no-show category, which could impact transfer interest, according to Bailey.

He believes potential Summerville suitors may have been put off by his failure to step up on the big occasion, although he still expects an outing for the Dutchman this summer.

Bailey said: “It will be interesting to see where he goes, he has a lot of interest. I don’t think the final did him much good because he was very poor.

“Obviously decisions are not made on one game, we know that, but in a big game like this I think the stakeholders would have liked to see him step up but he didn’t.

“I think he’s on a lot of teams’ rosters, but is he the first choice for a lot of teams? I’m not so sure but I’d be surprised if he starts for Leeds. The balance of probability is that he won’t start at Leeds next season, but they are in a healthy position to not allow a bargain deal.

“But if someone comes with more than £30m I think they will be quite hard to turn down. Especially if they think they can replace him, Willy Gnonto could stay put. Will they let Summerville, Harrison and Gnonto go in the same summer? I don’t think they would, but we’ll have to see what’s on the table.

“Leeds are sensitive enough that they might have to make at least one sale. I think he’d rather be Summerville than Archie Gray, that’s for sure. If it had been Gray, though, it would have been more money.”

What Summerville has said since the end of the season

Summerville finally broke his silence on the play-off final defeat to Leeds earlier this week when he posted a message on Instagram.

With him mentioning that he came back stronger as a team again, some fans may have bought in because he could be right here next season.

He said: “A difficult season, full of beautiful moments. Honored and grateful to be EFL Championship Player of the Year. Thank you, an award I would not have received without my colleagues.

“They helped me double my assists from last season and become the top scorer. Thank you for all the love and support. In the end, it was a disappointing end to the season and it still hurts, but we will come back stronger.”
