INSIDE THE VILLAGE: Free dental care for all? Not quite, not exactly

This week on the podcast: We check out the recently launched Canadian Dental Care Plan, a $13 billion initiative driven by both policy and politics. By now, many dentists – and patients – don’t smile

Welcome back to Inside the Villagea unique podcast where all news is local – and no topic is off limits.

In this week’s episode: Detailing the details.

The federal government recently introduced the Canadian Dental Care Plan, a $13 billion initiative aimed at covering basic dental procedures for uninsured Canadians. But so far, not everyone is smiling.

Thousands of dentists across the country have refused to enroll in the plan because they still have a mouthful of unanswered questions. And patients are even more confused, with many assuming – incorrectly – that the plan means free dental appointments.

Joining us to explain all the uncertainty is Dr. Maneesh Jain, President of the Ontario Dental Association. For the record, he didn’t join the program either.

Also on the show: What happens when two dozen Village Media editors gather in the same town? Lots of stories.

Hosted by Village Media Editor-in-Chief Scott Sexsmith and Michael Friscolanti, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from our chain of Ontario newsrooms. Produced by Derek Turner, the program also explores larger issues affecting the people of the province.
