Player explains why he jumped at opportunity at Leeds – Bielsa’s experience was certainly different

Italian goalkeeper Elia Caprile has admitted he jumped at the chance to join Leeds United early in his career, even though his move to Elland Road didn’t work out.

The goalkeeper spoke to Mondo Napoli and La Lazio Siamo Noi’s Sport Week about his time at Leeds and working under Marcelo Bielsa.

Caprile started his career at Chievo, progressing to the U19s, before moving to Leeds in January 2020.

He lasted just one year at Elland Road, never making a first-team appearance, but played 19 times for the U21s before heading to Pro Patria on loan.

He was eventually sold to Bari in July 2022 for €1.75m and has since enjoyed a steady rise, impressing for a year before joining Napoli, who loaned him to Empoli for this season. he seemed less certain and admits that this made him jump at the chance to join Leeds United.

“Leeds? I was never given a professional contract at Chievo,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting the moon, just enough to support myself. A few important clubs had also been looking for me, from which Chievo had demanded large sums. At that point, together with my agents, I jumped at the chance to move to Leeds.”

While Caprile may never have made the first team, that doesn’t mean he missed out on the chance to enjoy life under Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine manager was in charge at Elland Road when the goalkeeper arrived at the club as they secured promotion back to the Premier League that year.

Bielsa remains an icon at the club after his four years in charge which saw him completely revolutionize the club, rekindle their fan base and take them to the top flight for the first time in 16 years in exciting style, loaded with goals. attacking football.

He is known for his intense style and the effort he demands from his players, something that Caprile, who was not in the first team, also experienced.

“I happened to start training at half past ten in the morning and eat at three in the afternoon because they don’t let you off the field until the technical drills are done to perfection. The result is that, in the match, the team played with a disarming fluency, by heart,” he added.
