The impressive record set by Wakefield Trinity in the 1895 Cup triumph

Becoming the fifth club to lift the 1895 Cup, Wakefield Trinity more than doubled the biggest margin of victory in any of the competition’s four finals to date.

Trinity are red hot favorites for an instant return to Super League after ticking plenty of IMG boxes both on and off the pitch following last season’s relegation.

The reigning Championship League leaders demolished fellow second-tier Sheffield Eagles at Wembley on Saturday night by a 50-6 final scoreline despite trailing 6-0 by the 23rd minute.

Down 18-6 at half-time after a hooter try from substitute Thomas Doyle, Daryl Powell’s side went on to score 32 unanswered points in a blistering second-half performance, leaving no doubt where the trophy was headed .

And thanks to moving up in the standings, Wakefield got a pretty neat history, winning by a margin of 44 points under the arc.

Before Saturday’s victory, only four clubs had lifted the 1895 Cup – Sheffield in 2019, Featherstone Rovers in 2021, Leigh (then Centurions) in 2022 and Halifax Panthers last year.

The Eagles, the inaugural winners of the competition, held the record for the biggest margin of victory in a final with their 36-18 success against Widnes Vikings.

And that went under the famous Wembley arch following a Challenge Cup final involving Warrington Wolves, although on that occasion five years ago the Wire beat St Helens rather than being beaten by Wigan Warriors.

The only cup final since 1895 played away from Wembley to date was Leigh’s 30-16 triumph against Featherstone in 2022 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Elsewhere, a year earlier, Fev beat York 41-34 at Wembley.

And last year, Halifax’s win against the Batley Bulldogs at the National Stadium came by a 12-10 margin, escaping the Golden Point drama when Luke Hooley missed a touchline conversion for the Bulldogs to take the game over the mark 80 minutes.
