Failed Sheffield Canal to be repaired to prevent flooding

A report said the council needed around £80,000 a year for temporary arrangements, but managed to secure £1.4m from the government and the Environment Agency (EA) to fix the problem permanently, according to the Service Democracy Reporting Local.

In November 2019, the council said nine properties had been flooded and flood assessments suggested up to 35 homes could be at risk.

The document said an “expensive” flood risk mitigation scheme using pumps and “enhanced response procedures” had been in place for the past five years.

“This has prevented a repeat of property flooding, but disruption and flooding of the park and roads has occurred on numerous occasions, most recently during Storm Babet in October where a repeat of the 2019 floods was only narrowly avoided” , the board said.

The authority’s bid for £1,390,163 of flood and coastal erosion risk management funding and £112,000 from EA was successful.
