Cody Gakpo explains why a major problem at Liverpool can help the Netherlands at Euro 2024

Cody Gakpo impressed at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, eventually leading to a move to Liverpool, where the Dutchman insists he is now a much better player as he prepares for Euro 2024 with the Netherlands.

Cody Gakpo believes Liverpool’s injury crisis last season made him a better player.

Gakpo was used in a variety of positions by Jurgen Klopp as the Reds’ squad was decimated by the loss of several top players. Signed as a striker in a £40million deal from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, the Dutchman’s versatility allowed Klopp to continue to lead Liverpool to the Carabao Cup and third place in his final season at Anfield.

Now Gakpo enters the Euros looking to improve on an impressive World Cup two years ago that saw him score three goals before the Netherlands fell to eventual champions Argentina in a semi-final tie.

Gakpo said: “We had an injury crisis at Liverpool which had to be dealt with in a certain way. You just have to deal with it. Sometimes it went really well and sometimes not so well because of the constant switching.

“But it was a process that I ultimately gained a lot from. In the end, I’m thankful that it turned out to be a very instructive season.

“What will my role be (in Germany)? I haven’t thought of that yet. I felt that my role was changing – and maybe others were looking at me differently.

“As you get older and some younger guys come in, then the dynamic automatically changes. But I always had a great sense of responsibility to do my best for the team. This is how I am.”

Netherlands manager Ronaldo Koeman believes he will be able to deploy Gakpo in five different roles during the tournament. And the 25-year-old believes Koeman will be able to call on a player who has also improved physically during his time in the Premier League.
