This weekend, in nostalgia, we take a look back at Coventry schools in the 1990s. From steamed jam puddings to the first time computers entered classrooms, it was a very different era.

Images from our archives capture everything from fundraisers and school trips, the opening of new facilities and everyday scenes such as the lunch ladies’ dinner.

There’s also a celebrity visit with photos from 1996 when Boyzone appeared on Tile Hill Wood School’s Big Breakfast live show, thrilling many young fans.

Youngsters at a Coventry school joined forces to turn tins into cash and clean up the environment. 11-year-olds and 12-year-olds at Keresley Newlands Combined School in Grove Lane are collecting used drinks cans as part of a mini-enterprise scheme. They hope it will help them learn business and raise money for charity. Teacher Graham Pemberton said 16 students in his class had split into groups with responsibility for different parts of the operation. He said: “The advertising team dressed up in big boxes and went to classes, reminded people to bring their boxes. “The kids were so enthusiastic. Originally, they were going to bring their own used cans, but decided to go out and collect from the streets. “It went down really well with some people who live around here.” The young people collected almost 1,000 cans in three weeks.
