Whipsidery Beach near Newquay will have a gate after the cliff falls

A temporary gate is being installed at the top of steps leading to a Cornish beach, with the council warning there is a “high potential for further rock falls”.

The steps leading down to Whipsidery Beach near Newquay were fenced off for safety reasons after a rock fall in November.

Cornwall Council said the new gate was needed because people had moved the fence to access the steps and were putting their lives and the lives of others at risk.

It added that the council-owned steps would remain closed for the “foreseeable future while the rock falls persist”.
