Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United agree deal for Lewis O’Brien

Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough are interested in signing Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest this summer, according to Alan Nixon.

Ipswich Town are preparing for life in the Premier League after promotion last season.

Middlesbrough and Sheffield United are preparing for another year in the Championship, with the former finishing 8th and the latter relegating.

All three clubs are pursuing different things at the moment, but all have their eyes on one man to boost their ranks this summer.

O’Brien, 25, spent the season on loan at Boro last time out. He made 23 Championship appearances for Michael Carrick’s side and assisted one goal in the second leg.

He joined Nottingham Forest following a good campaign with Huddersfield Town in the 2021/22 season, but failed to make his mark at The City Ground and was soon sent to America for a spell in the MLS.

Now, it looks like he will be leaving Forest for good. Nixon reports that Boro are keen on a reunion, while the Blades are also tracking the midfielder. However, their takeover situation prevents them from making any moves at the moment.

The report continues to claim that Kieran McKenna’s side have the upper hand. O’Brien would prefer to stay in the Premier League and Forest would solve some of their own financial worries by selling O’Brien earlier this summer. His value is under £10m.

A race in three

It is not entirely clear how much Forest would want for their man this summer, or how much McKenna’s side would be willing to part with.

That could leave the door open for Boro or Sheffield United later in the window should Ipswich Town fail to complete a deal.

O’Brien is yet to truly prove himself at Premier League level, but given a string of consistent performances, he could be a very handy player to have at Portman Road next season.

A lot of work to do

The championship, as always, is difficult to predict before next season. Both Middlesbrough and Sheffield United will have aspirations of finishing in the top six, and Carrick’s recent contract extension shows they trust the former Manchester United man is the right person to do that for them.

Meanwhile, Ipswich Town will be hoping they can survive in the Premier League and start to establish themselves back in the top flight after a long absence.

It proved last season that it is not an easy thing to do. However, Ipswich Town have spent the last two years proving people wrong and at the moment it’s hard to go against what McKenna is building.
