Leeds Rhinos have suffered a sub-par season so far in 2024. Rhinos have invested heavily in their playing squad in the close season with the notable captures of Brodie Croft and Andy Ackers from Super League rivals Salford Red Devils.

Leeds’ slow start to the year has seen them pursue the biggest restructure of the Rugby operation for several years. The Rhinos have been without a sporting director since Kevin Sinfield left the club for Rugby Union in 2021.

Announcing the creation of the role, chief executive Gary Hetherington said the club would be looking for a candidate with significant expertise and experience. Hetherington also said the club would aim for a meeting by early June.

Now Serious About Rugby League understands the club is on the verge of announcing its new sporting director and he will join from a rival Super League club.

Serious Rugby League understands the general manager of Salford Red Devils will soon be announced at Leeds Rhinos’ new sporting director. A source close to the deal said Blease will join Rhinos imminently.

Prior to his career in administration, Blease was a Rugby League player, playing for Salford and Swinton Lions during his career. He has overseen a transformational period at Salford, with the club going from perennial relegation battle to genuine silverware contenders.

Blease joined Salford in 2016 under the ownership of Marwan Koukash. During his time at the club, Salford appeared in one Super League grand final and one Challenge Cup final and are in the top six of Super League this season, confounding expectations that they would struggle to be competitive.

The move will also raise questions over the futures of Rohan Smith and Paul Rowley. Rowley enjoys an excellent relationship with Blease and may be the next to cross the Pennines at Headingley.
