Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town and Bradford City want Nathan Shepperd

Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town and Bradford City are among the parties interested in free agent Nathan Shepperd this summer, according to Pete O’Rourke.

Barnsley are preparing for another year in League One after losing in the third-tier play-off semi-final last season.

Every club is trying to get a head start in the transfer business this summer and one man who is attracting a lot of attention is Shepperd.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper is set to become a free agent at the end of this month, leaving Wycombe Wanderers just months after joining.

He did not make an appearance for Wycombe Wanderers after joining from Dundalk, where he made 79 senior appearances, keeping 28 clean sheets in all competitions.

O’Rourke now reports that Shepperd is wanted by a number of Football League clubs. Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town and Bradford City are joined by Burton Albion, AFC Wimbledon and Northampton Town in the race to sign the young stopper.

A wanted man

The youngster came through the ranks at Swansea City but did not make a senior outing for the Welsh club before eventually making the permanent move to Ireland.

He moved to the Chairboys earlier this year but failed to make a mark in their campaign and is set to be on the move again this summer.

He is yet to prove himself in senior England football but has shown his class while in Ireland and is clearly a more than capable goalkeeper for the third and fourth tier.

At 23, he will want consistent playing time and that will likely be a big factor in deciding where his future lies. Barnsley are the bigger of the clubs mentioned and will be hoping to push for promotion to the Championship next season, but a move down to League Two or lower into League One may be best for Shepperd’s individual development.

A big decision

Shepperd could have settled down somewhere after his brief spell at Wycombe Wanderers. It would allow him to show the best version of himself on the pitch and once again highlights the importance of him making the right move this summer.

It remains to be seen where it can go, and it looks like this saga is still in its early stages. But the sooner a club makes their move, the better chance they have of beating others to the chase for the 23-year-old.

The former Welsh youth international holds all the cards as it stands and is one to watch as the season approaches.
