Wayne Rooney lands a new job just weeks after the former Everton star returned to football

Former Everton star Wayne Rooney has landed a new role at the Sunday Times ahead of the upcoming European Championships in Germany.

The iconic mascot will provide the news outlet with a column throughout the tournament, which begins on June 14. Rooney is already a pundit for the BBC as part of their coverage of the competition, with England looking to get out of Group C as they face Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia.

After being sacked by Birmingham City after 15 games in charge, the 38-year-old returned to the dugout last month as he was appointed Plymouth Argyle’s new manager. Rooney replaced another Liverpudlian in Ian Foster after the former Al-Ettifaq manager was sacked in the latter stages of last season.

The Times’ head of sport, James Restall, confirmed Rooney’s appointment. He tweeted: “Delighted to have @WayneRooney back writing for @TimesSport during the Euros. Here is the story of his three euros – a fascinating insight that can be read for free now”.

Speaking on Argyle TV after his appointment at Home Park, Rooney admitted he will be balancing his television work with his new venture into football management.

He said: “It’s very busy, every day now is a working day if you like, whether it’s here or with the kids and obviously I’ve got some commitments with the European Championships.
