Wayne Rooney lands a new job as Manchester United legend set for a hectic summer

Wayne Rooney has landed himself a new job for the summer as he prepares to share his weekly football views.

The former Manchester United forward has been recruited as a columnist for the Sunday Times during the European Championships, allowing him to share his thoughts on the Three Lions and other talking points from the tournament in Germany.

His first presentation looks at his own experience of competing at the Euros, looking back on his breakthrough tour in 2004 and the bitter disappointment of 2016 after being knocked out by Iceland. Rooney will balance this with working as a pundit for the BBC during their coverage of Euro 2024, continuing a theme of former England media work following his recent appearances on Sky Sports towards the end of the season.

The 38-year-old was also recently hired as a guest on Gary Neville’s Overlap YouTube channel, featuring Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Jill Scott and Jamie Carragher. Such commitments will have to be balanced alongside the commitment of his coaching role at Plymouth Argyle after being appointed as the Championship club’s new manager at the end of May.

This is Rooney’s first role back in the dugout since being sacked by Birmingham City in January after just 15 games in charge. Prior to that, the former United striker held coaching roles at DC United and Derby County.

Describing the challenge before him, he recently remarked: “Taking on this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I’d like to thank the chairman and board for the confidence they have shown in me.

“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I’m looking forward to helping build a squad of players to play expansive football – and entertain the Green Army.
