The Northern Lights could be seen from Liverpool and beyond this week

People living in a number of parts of the UK could see the northern lights on Friday, according to BBC Weather experts.

The aurora borealis could light up the night sky after nightfall tomorrow, May 9. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, many people aspire to see them, but there are certain criteria that must be met for this to happen.

When the incredible astronomical event occurs, your best chance of seeing it is to be somewhere with as little light pollution as possible. For Merseyside this includes Crosby, New Brighton and Hoylake beaches.

We could get a ‘brief’ glimpse here as in a new update this evening (Thursday), BBC Weather said at X: ‘The next chance to see the Northern Lights will be on Friday evening. Clear sky sightings are expected in Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland.

“A chance to become visible for a short time from N England and North Wales as well. #auroraborealis”

According to the Met Office, the aurora appear “as a consequence of solar activity and result from collisions of charged particles from the solar wind colliding with molecules in the Earth’s upper atmosphere”. The lights often appear as large areas of colors such as green, pink and blue.
