Village pub is back as new owners fall in love with Cornwall

A small village is to get its pub back up and running in just days after it closed its doors earlier this year. The Jubilee Inn, in Pelynt, has been taken over by new owners.

Linda and Steve Mason say they have already “fallen in love” with the community and the St Austell Brewery pub and are ready to go. It will be the first pub for the couple – who moved from Buckinghamshire for the big life change.

Having been stationed in Cornwall during her time in the Royal Navy and raising her family in Cornwall, Linda was always keen to return to the area one day. She said of the pub: “As soon as we walked in we just thought yes.”

Linda said: “We looked at a few pubs and on the same day we knew we’d lost another one, we were shown here the Jubilee Inn. As soon as we walked in, we just thought yes. The community has already been great with people coming to say hello.

“We went to the shop the other day at 8am and didn’t get back until 10.30am – people are so keen to say hello and talk about the pub, it’s lovely. We felt so welcome and we can see that the pub is an important part of the community and we just want to give people back the pub.”

Most of the staff who previously worked at the pub return, as does the chef. The team plan to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week when the kitchen is back up and running towards the end of May, with their coveted Sunday roasts also returning.

Originally a farmhouse, the pub is being spruced up with some light painting and cleaning, and Steve and Linda have big plans to increase their sustainability efforts.

Steve said: “In the long term we hope to be able to install solar panels on the roof, collect rainwater for toilets, move to an all-electric kitchen (supplied from a renewable energy supplier) and install a sump pump of heat. so we don’t have to rely so much on fossil fuels.

“There will be no single-use plastics in sight, we will be using local suppliers and produce and we hope to put the mileage and carbon footprint of our tables on the menu.

“Our goal is to get an award for Green Tourism. We want to make a conscious effort to do everything we can to reduce our impact.” Steve, Linda and the team will be re-opening the pub on May 4th with free tea, coffee and cake.
