BBC to move Birmingham operation to new creative district for filming ‘MasterChef’ and ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight, drama ‘Two Tone’

The BBC is stepping up its Birmingham operations, moving from its two-decade-old Mailbox site to a new creative quarter in Digbeth.

The move is part of Across the UK chief executive Tim Davie’s plan to better represent Britain’s nations and regions. Chef soon to move to Digbeth and other local commissions include drama Two tons FROM Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

The creative quarter’s new site, due to open in 2026, will be a purpose-built broadcasting centre, which will also house the BBC. Newsbeat and Asian Network teams.

Davie hailed an “important day for the region”.

“We said we would do more in the Midlands and we would deliver,” he added. “The new broadcast center in Digbeth will provide our teams with the best facilities and technology to serve audiences for decades to come.”

Andy Street, mayor of the West Midlands, which includes Birmingham, said the site would be “the greenest and most modern facility at the BBC”.

Birmingham used to be a central hub for BBC TV production, but this has slowed in recent years and local boy Knight is currently trying to fight back, also launching his own Digbeth Studios, which will house the long-gestating film. Peaky Blinders feature film.
