Leeds United Centre-back Liam Cooper is set to leave the club when his contract expires this summer, ending 10 years at Elland Road in the process.

The side that won promotion at Elland Road in 2020 is no longer intact after four years with emotional farewells since then.

It was strong Liam Cooper, who came into this season still as club captain and refused to leave the club while others jumped ship.

With his contract set to expire at the end of June, he will no doubt be reflecting on an incredibly fruitful spell at Leeds since joining in 2014 from Chesterfield.

Here, we look at the top five moments of Cooper’s Leeds career…

5: Leeds United’s first goal

Cooper was one of the domestic signings made in the 2014 summer window when Massimo Cellino went wild.

He’s flown well under the radar in the process but has been, unsurprisingly, one of the most consistent names in the squad.

It didn’t take long for the centre-back to find his first goal for Leeds, coming in a 3-1 home win against Blackpool in November 2014, bringing down a high pass before slotting home from the edge of the box in front. of Kop.

That strike was the Scottish defender’s first of 11 for Leeds and arguably his best.

Will Leeds be promoted next season?

4: Wear the Leeds captain’s armband for the first time

Just as his first goal for Leeds was short-lived, he was captaining the team not long after in the same season.

So far in the 14/15 season we’ve seen Dave Hockaday and Darkko Milanic – underscoring how long Cooper was here to begin with – and Neil Redfearn at the helm for the rest of the season.

In the process, he looked much more focused on the youth of the squad and the local lads benefited, with Cooper receiving his boyhood club’s armband for the first time in January 2015 in a 1-0 defeat away at Sunderland in the FA. Cup.

At the age of 23, he led the team in scoring for most of the games he played the rest of the season.

3: Captain Leeds United in the Premier League

It’s all well and good to be the captain of a team that has been floundering for years with very few good characters present in the team.

However, it’s quite another to be the player leading the team in its best era since relegation in 2004, captaining Marcelo Bielsa.

Missing the first game of the 20/21 season through injury, Cooper returned to the line-up and was key to making the team’s comeback such a joyous one, with massive results throughout the season, seeing Leeds finish in ninth place.

2: He turns 10 at his childhood club

This season did not end the way Cooper would have dreamed, with his contract expiring and hopes that his final act at the club had led the team to promotion, even though he was part of it.

That said, making it to 10 is something very few players can boast of having done at Elland Road.

It is rare in the modern game for players to amass such a career with one club and it is a testament to the defender.

The first: the 2020 lifting championship title

Of course, what is arguably the best moment of Cooper’s career was the man who lifted the championship title in 2020.

Leeds won the league under Bielsa in remarkable circumstances and Cooper was again key at the heart of a very strong defence.

Not many Leeds players have had the privilege of wearing the armband, let alone lifting silverware on top of it, but Cooper is one of them.

That Bielsa team will forever be remembered by the fans and Cooper takes on the captaincy, something he is undoubtedly incredibly proud of.
