Leicester City have released Maswanhise, the recent Stockport County candidate

Leicester City have released Tawanda Maswanhise, a former Stockport County prospect, according to a report from Leicestershire Live.

Leicester City are heading to the Premier League and this summer is set to be one of change.

The Foxes have lost manager Enzo Maresca to Chelsea and financial woes have seen them cash out players to avoid further penalties for PSR breaches. However, while some players will be sold, others will leave when their contracts expire.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Marc Albrighton and Dennis Praet have been confirmed to leave.

However, official confirmation from Leicester City regarding other players has not emerged. Now, however, Leicestershire Live reports that many of the youngsters will be moving on.

Among those said to have been released is promising forward Tawanda Maswanhise, who has made just one first-team appearance but has been a mainstay in the Foxes’ academy ranks.

The 21-year-old Zimbabwean international has scored 23 goals and five assists in 69 games for the U21s.

THE TEST STARTS!

With Maswanhise heading into free agency, it will be intriguing to see if the issue piques Stockport County’s interests.

The League Two title winners courted Maswanhise in April as the forward began exploring his options in the event of a summer move away from Leicester City.

Given how he impressed with the Hatters, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he made a move. Maswanhise scored a hat-trick in a friendly against Brentford B, his three being the only Stockport to score in a 3-3 draw.

A performance like that will surely leave a lasting impression, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Maswanhise has a few options to choose from as free agency awaits.

Having played a lot of U21 football in recent seasons, it seems inevitable that Maswanhise will get a chance in the senior game at his next club.

He is 21 years old and will turn 22 in November, so the time has come for him to be tested in first-team football.

The chances of him doing so at Leicester City seemed slim, so he will be better off at a new club as he looks to break free and maximize his promise over the coming years.

Plenty of players released by top academies end up getting chances in the Football League. Maswanhise could follow in those footsteps, although only time will tell where he ends up next.
