We are delighted to expand the Speech Stars initiative

We are delighted to be expanding the Speech Stars initiative to boost young children’s communication skills.

This program trains volunteers and students to support children aged three to seven, focusing on improving their speech and language skills. The initiative is not only open to volunteers, but also to parents and carers, empowering them to support their children’s language development at home.

We are introducing a new round of training sessions for parents and carers and volunteers starting in June. Access to the training is free and involves a four-week commitment, with sessions lasting three hours each week.

Volunteers are trained to work in schools and help children develop their listening, speaking, vocabulary, sentence construction and social interaction skills.

Tom Brailsford, Strategic Director for Children and Families, said:

“Speech Stars is transforming the lives of children in our district by providing crucial support for their speech and language development. By training volunteers and engaging families, we create a community that cultivates the communication skills that are critical to lifelong success.”

Chloe trained as a Star Speech at Healey JIN School and now volunteers there two days a week. The course not only armed her with techniques she can use both at school and in her home life, but also improved her confidence. She said: “I learned a lot and the tutors were really nice and helpful, I would definitely recommend her.”
