Proposed changes to Wakefield Park courtyards

Pickleball at Wakefield Park.

The Fairfax County Park Authority plans to change the configuration of the tennis and pickleball courts at Wakefield Park in Annandale.

The park has nine tennis courts, two dual-use courts (two tennis courts and four pickleball courts), and two dedicated pickleball courts.

“Over time, the use of dual-use courts has trended heavily toward pickleball and created fewer opportunities for tennis,” the Park Authority states.

Now he’s proposing to convert one tennis court, currently in need of repair, into four pickleball courts and return the two dual-use courts to tennis only.

The work would result in 10 dedicated tennis courts and six dedicated pickleball courts.

A second phase of the proposal calls for replacing half of a walled practice area with two additional pickleball courts.

The Park Authority is hosting a virtual community meeting on the proposal on July 9 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be broadcast live on the county’s public contribution platform. A call-in option is also available by dialing 855-925-2801 and entering the appointment code 6161.

Community members will be able to submit comments online from July 9 to August 8.

If the project goes ahead, work on phase 1 could be completed by fall 2024. Phase 2 could be completed by spring 2025.
