Bristol Council discusses ticket charge to support artists | News

Bristol politicians are considering introducing a ticket tax to support the local music sector, it has been announced.

Bristol City Council has said it is exploring the best way to support the local music sector in a tough economy and has put the idea of a ticket tax out to public consultation.

“This creative sector faces barriers including rising venue costs, lower public spending due to cost of living pressures and a lack of support for emerging and grassroots artists,” the council said.

The proposed levy would feed into a “self-sustaining music fund” to support local music venues, events and artists.

“This initiative proposes a nominal addition of 1-3% to the price of tickets for all music events in the city and would apply to various venues such as concert halls, nightclubs, music venues and even bars,” he said. added the council.

Last month, a cross-party Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee report called for an arena and stadium ticket tax to be introduced to support popular music venues facing rising costs.

He said given the urgency of the crisis, a voluntary tax on arena and stadium concert tickets would be the most feasible way to make an immediate impact,

The committee added that if no agreement was reached by September, or if the proposed scheme failed to collect enough revenue to support the sector, the government should introduce a statutory levy.
