3 Liverpool players who must excel in the 2024-25 season

As the transfer window prepares to open, which in turn will unleash rumours, arrivals, departures and everything in between, I wanted to take stock of a few players already here who have a huge season ahead of them .

Whether or not a player or a club declares allegiance to each other, we all know at the end of the day it’s a results business and if you don’t pull your weight, the exit door is always looming.

That said, this list isn’t an indictment of these players, just an observation to note that they could silence a lot of critics with a strong 2024-25 campaign. Let’s see who they are.

We start with one of the most controversial players on the team. Nunez had 18 goals and 13 assists in all competitions last season, both second only to the great Mohamed Salah.

He’s such a talented player who works so hard whenever he’s on the court that you can’t help but root for him. However, for the numbers above, they only tell part of the story. He could easily have had closer to 30 goals if he was more composed or clinical in front of goal.

He improved on his 15-goal return from his debut season, but the jump was not enough. There are many who want Liverpool to invest in a new no. 9 to mitigate its inconsistency.

It seems that the club and coach Arne Slot have full confidence in Darwin going forward. He has still scored some incredible goals and a recent hat-trick for Uruguay reinforces his skills.

If he can put his late woes behind him next season and get over 25 goals, all critics will fall away. In this scenario, the club should go deep into several competitions challenging for silverware.

On the other hand, if Darwin has another up-and-down season with long spells of goalless contributions, it would be highly likely that the club would look to move in another direction.

He is an integral part of the attack and the club needs him to remind us why on a weekly basis.
