Clarendon Leisure Center shoots LIVE as firefighters tackle huge blaze in Salford – updates

Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze in Salford. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) is at the scene of the fire at Clarendon Leisure Centre, on Liverpool Street.

The road is closed in both directions this morning (May 10). Images from the fire show huge plumes of smoke and flames from the early hours.




In a statement, GMFRS says they were called before 3am. “At around 2.45am today (Friday 10 May), eight fire engines from Greater Manchester plus the command support unit from Hyde fire station, the first engine from Bolton fire station and the technical response from Leigh were called to a fire involving a leisure center off Liverpool Street, Salford,” a spokesman said.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked quickly to bring the fire under control using drums and hose jets. Crews remain in attendance alongside partners from Greater Manchester Police and Salford Borough Council with roads closed.”

In another tweet, GMFRS posted: “Firefighters are currently tackling a fire involving a leisure center off Liverpool Street in Salford. Nearby residents should keep their windows and doors closed and people are asked to avoid the area while crews deal with the incident.”

Travel service Inrix posted: “Liverpool Street has been closed in both directions due to fire in the building at Clarendon Leisure Center on Fitzwarren Street at A5063 Albion Way.”

Refurbishment works

Clarendon Leisure Center has undergone some refurbishment work this year.

According to the Salford Community Leisure website, the gym and gymnasium have been closed for refurbishment and are due to reopen this spring.

The pool reopened last month after renovations.

The full works include extending and redecorating the gym, introducing new cardio equipment, replacing boilers and redeveloping the car park.

The cause of the fire is not yet known

The cause of the devastating fire has not yet been confirmed, I understand the MEN.

Firemen’s statement

Crews were called before 3am and remain at the scene this morning.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said:

An eyewitness said Manchester Evening News: “I work in Trafford Park and our workshop filled with smoke so we went to investigate… we could barely see into our yard it was so thick.”

Crews worked in the early hours to tackle a large fire at a leisure center in Salford.

Clarendon Leisure Centre, on Liverpool Street, has been on fire since earlier this morning.

Residents near the site are urged to keep windows and doors closed.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service tweeted about the fire shortly before 4am.

Images and footage shared on social media show flames bursting from the site and large plumes of smoke.
