Every Liverpool shirt number available ahead of Arne Slot’s first transfer window

Liverpool squad numbers in 2023/24.

Prior to the 1990s, the jersey numbers worn by football players generally tended to go from one to 11. This was in the era before the name on the back of jerseys became a fabric of the game, so players would just change their jersey numbers. jerseys every time a certain player was not selected or was unavailable.

This is no longer the case in the modern game. Now, we have players going from one to 99 and one wonders how long it will be before we see the first three-digit number on the back of a jersey.

Liverpool squad numbers range from number one to 98, in the case of youngster Trey Nyoni. With players set to leave Liverpool this summer, what numbers could be available for selection ahead of the start of the new season?

Numbers one through eleven are currently taken. However, with Thiago Alcantara set to leave Anfield when his contract expires in a few weeks, the number six will become available. Another imminent departure – Joel Matip – means the number 32 will be vacant after eight years.

Working in numerical order, the next lowest numbers available after Thiago’s number six are 13, 14, 15 and 16. However, number 12 could also be available soon, the future of third-choice goalkeeper Adrian, also uncertain. Numbers 23, 25 and 27 are also free and available. 23 and 27 were worn by Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez in 2022/23, but the pair switched numbers last summer.

Other squad numbers that could open up this summer due to departures could be numbers 62 and 72. The former number belongs to Ireland’s Caoimhin Kelleher, but the 25-year-old could leave this summer in search of first-team football after years spent as Alisson’s back-up.

Number 72, meanwhile, belongs to Sepp van den Berg. The Dutch centre-back recently stated that he wants to leave Anfield in search of regular football this summer, opening up the possibility of leaving the number vacant.

Colombia winger Díaz and Mohamed Salah have both been linked with potential summer exits, meaning the number seven and 11 could also be available, but it remains to be seen whether one of them will leave.

Liverpool.com says: Team numbers can be seen as a vital marketing tool, especially for younger fans who like to have their favorite player printed on the back of their jersey. However, for Liverpool going into next season, it could be a case of ‘as you are’ unless some big names depart and release their best selling numbers.
