How attendance at the 2024 Challenge Cup Final compares to the new previous Wembley figures

The Challenge Cup final graced Wembley’s new turf for the 17th time on Saturday afternoon. Securing their 21st title, it was Wigan Warriors who emerged victorious, beating Warrington Wolves 18-8 to ensure the club held all four trophies on offer at the same time.

Beating Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge in February, Wigan won the Super League Grand Final against Catalans Dragons last autumn. They also won the League Leaders Shield, securing top spot against Leigh Leopards in the final round of the regular season last year.

A total of 64,845 turned up to see their latest trophy win, a jump on last year’s cup final between Leigh Leopards and Hull KR on 6,632. On the day, 58,213 saw Leythers triumph 17-16 over the Robins, with Lachlan Lam getting the winning drop goal in golden point.

Meanwhile, the 2024 edition was the biggest attendance since Hull FC beat Wigan 18-14 in 2017, with 68,525 in London on the day to see the Black and Whites go back-to-back.

However, the last time the final broke the 80,000 attendance barrier was almost a decade ago, with 80,140 there to see Leeds Rhinos inflict a record defeat on the Robins in 2015. Tom Briscoe scored five tries, Rhinos winning 50-0.

The biggest ever attendance at the new Wembley was in 2010, with 85,217 through the turnstiles to witness Warrington’s 30-6 defeat of Leeds. The first final under the arch saw St Helens 30-8 winners over Catalans Dragons in front of 84,241.

The lowest unrestricted figure was in 2018, with just 50,672 there for the Catalans to beat Warrington 20-14. In 2021 there was a reduced crowd of 40,000 as St Helens beat Castleford Tigers 26-12. Leeds’ 17-16 win over Salford Red Devils in 2020 was played behind closed doors.
