Rare animal breeds were among the stars of the first day of the Royal Cornwall Show on Thursday.

The Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RSBT) has exhibited a variety of cattle, pigs and sheep in a bid to encourage people to keep them.

The event at the Royal Cornwall Events Center near Wadebridge offers animal classes, displays and stalls over three days.

Thousands of people are expected to visit Cornwall’s celebration of agriculture.

Angela Kingsnorth, from RSBT in Cornwall, said the Gloucester heifer, which produces the milk that makes Gloucester cheese, is a good example of an extremely rare breed.

She said: “They are rarer than your giant bears or white rhinos.

“People will put money to support them because they are emotional quotes, but these animals are part of our heritage.

“They are as important as the country houses and the magnificent views we have here.”

“They are all rare, we are trying to make sure people are aware of this and will keep these animals, we don’t want to lose any breeds,” she added.
