Former Hull FC coaching target Lee Briers is lining up a huge job

Former Warrington midfielder and Wigan and England manager Lee Briers looks set to make a surprise move to the NRL despite Super League links.

After making his mark at St Helens, Briers spent 15 years at St Helens and represented Wales and Great Britain.

Since retiring from the game, he has held high-profile coaching roles with Wigan Warriors and England, and is currently attack coach at the NRL Brisbane Broncos.

He seemed destined to move into a head coaching role sooner rather than later.

Last year, he told rugby-league.com: “I’ve always had confidence in my coaching ability and if I happen to become a head coach, it pays off. That’s ultimately the target, whether in Super League or the NRL.”

However, he rejected a move from Hull FC to appoint him as their head coach, before eventually securing his colleague John Cartwright for the role.

Now, he is reportedly set to join Wayne Bennett at the South Sydney Rabbitohs in an assistant coaching role, according to The Australian Daily Telegraph.

The saga surrounding the head coaching role at Souths continued for months following the sacking of Jason Demetriou, with high-profile names such as Sam Burgess reportedly in the mix, but they eventually settled on the legendary coach Wayne Bennett.

Now, it looks like they will add Lee Briers to the ranks in 2025, according to The Telegraph.

They reported that Briers is “now keen to have a spell under Bennett and eventually become an NRL head coach”, suggesting his stint at Souths under maestro Wayne Bennett could actually be the final “apprenticeship”. That’s the approach former St Helens boss Kristian Woolf took while serving as Bennett’s assistant at the Dolphins before stepping into the role next year.

If these reports come to pass and Briers leaves to join Souths, then it could prove to be a nightmare for the Brisbane Broncos and their head coach Kevvie Walters, who, following the loss of Cartwright, has now lost two assistant coaches in time for two. weeks and the search for a replacement will have to begin.

Now that Briers won’t be on his way to Hull FC, it will surely be 2026 at the earliest when he gets his first taste of life as a head coach.
