‘It’s inevitable’ – Gary Neville explains why Manchester United will start winning again

Gary Neville is confident Manchester United will “get it right” despite the prospect of their worst league season in 34 years.

United have lost a record 13 games in the Premier League era and are eighth in the table after crashing out of Europe altogether before Christmas.

A second consecutive FA Cup final in Manchester on May 25 offers the chance to salvage silverware from the campaign in what could be manager Erik ten Hag’s last game in charge.

United have won just four trophies since the last championship in 2013, but Neville optimistically suggested an FA Cup triumph could signal a similar turning point to when United lifted it in 1990.

It marked Sir Alex Ferguson’s first trophy with the club in a season that saw United finish 13th and was the start of their eventual dominance of English football.

“As soon as the sun comes up, Manchester United will start winning again,” said Neville. “It is a fact. When that is, I don’t know. There can be no guarantee, but I know these things go in cycles.

“I lived my whole childhood watching Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal winning trophies, winning the old Division One and I was patient. I had to wait until I was 18, 19 when Manchester United won a league title for the first time in my life and then I won a lot of league titles and now I haven’t won one for 11 years.

“I know very well that in my lifetime – I hope – Manchester United will win trophies, but they will win trophies again. We’ll get it right, as Liverpool will, as Arsenal will. You can’t keep these great clubs down. I’m sorry, they’re too big, they’re too established, they have a great history, they go through lean times.

“Look, hopefully in three, four weeks, this FA Cup final against Manchester City, which is such a tough game, we know how good City are, but if they can defy the odds, who knows where it could go.

“You know, in 1989-90 Sir Alex Ferguson won an FA Cup which put faith in him, in a group of players. Then they won a Cup Winners’ Cup, then they won the League Cup, then finally they won a league title.

“It was block by block, step by step and this could be just around the corner. Or it could be a few years away. But they will win again, Manchester United. It’s inevitable.”
