Cornwall is officially the most popular place in the UK to visit in 2024

Cornwall has won the title of UK’s most coveted holiday destination this year, dethroning Yorkshire from last year’s top spot. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed the nation’s favorite places to stay, with Cornwall taking the lead, celebrated for its idyllic beaches, charming villages and stunning scenery.

Scotland, Devon and Yorkshire are also among the top destinations Brits are keen to explore in 2024. Following are North Wales, Cumbria and the Isle of Wight, all vying for attention as must-see UK locations .



Commissioned by Sykes Holiday Cottages for its annual Staycation Index, the research found that 77% of people plan to take at least one domestic holiday this year. What’s more, the holiday rental company’s study revealed that the average Briton will enjoy three stays in 2024.

He added: “We’re hoping for another great summer for UK travel, with ever-popular destinations such as Cornwall and the Scottish Highlands continuing to attract visitors.”

The results also show that more than four in 10 (42%) are opting for a main holiday rather than traveling abroad. The agency’s index also highlighted a trend towards more frequent and shorter breaks, which boosted growth, with short break bookings up 44%.

This is corroborated by research conducted by OnePoll.com, which showed that 35% of people prefer these shorter and longer vacations. The main reasons for choosing shorter breaks include experiencing more locations, enjoying regular escapes and being compatible with busy schedules.

When it comes to the preferred type of accommodation, cottage-style holiday homes are the most popular choice, surpassing luxury hotels which were the favorites last year. Interestingly, 54 percent of people will book a vacation based only on accommodation and not location.

The convenience of traveling to the UK is the main reason (43 per cent) for choosing a holiday over a trip abroad. Exactly one third find it less stressful and 32% are attracted by the lower costs compared to traveling abroad.

For those taking a main holiday to the UK this year, expect to spend an average of £1,070 in total – including travel, accommodation, food and spending money. Coastal and countryside walks are travelers’ favorite UK holiday activity, followed by exploring local attractions and pub lunches, according to the data.

In addition to visiting well-known areas, 36% plan to travel to locations off the usual tourist trail. Lesser-visited areas such as Somerset, Argyll and Bute and Kent have become popular destinations for UK travelers, according to a recent survey.

Revealing hidden gems, 65% of those surveyed find satisfaction in discovering lesser-known attractions or places. Graham Donoghue of Sykes Holiday Cottage admitted that: “It was interesting to dig deeper into the travel trends that have affected travelers this year.”

He added: “As well as the growing desire for the casual getaway, we are seeing a thirst among many for the lodge experience and exploring off the beaten track destinations.”


With a multitude of options available; ranging from picturesque country retreats to bustling city breaks, Brits are spoiled for choice when it comes to holidays. He adds: “While Cornwall is the most popular destination this year, there are plenty of other, lesser-known locations that shouldn’t be missed.”
