Hannover 96 lose interest in Cresswell, chasing Knight

Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell has been subject to interest from Hannover 96, but the German club have moved on to other targets, according to BILD (via Sport Witness).

Leeds United are hoping to regain promotion to the Premier League this season.

Daniel Farke’s side finished 3rd last time out but are hoping to secure an automatic promotion place in the top two this time around.

However, it looks set to be a busy summer at Elland Road, with plenty of comings and goings looking likely.

A man heading for the exit is Cresswell. The 21-year-old made just seven appearances for the Whites last season.

Alan Nixon reported that clubs in France and Germany were circling, one of them Hannover 96 in Germany’s second tier. However, a new update from Germany claims the Bundesliga 2 club have dropped out of the race to sign the Englishman, instead focusing on their pursuit of Peterborough United man Josh Knight.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Talent to play

The 21-year-old is a very good player. Cresswell spent a year on loan at Millwall, so he has proven himself in the Championship and it is no surprise that he has already attracted interest from several different clubs in several countries.

It remains to be seen where he would prefer his future to be, but it would not be a surprise to see some English clubs begin to line up a move for the defender this summer.

Leaving is definitely the best move for both parties. Leeds United have a strong squad and Cresswell is simply not looking. He will benefit greatly from leaving and moving to a club where consistent first team football is almost guaranteed.

Making the right move

Playing time should be at the forefront of Cresswell’s mind when making a decision this summer.

The former England youth international cannot afford to warm a bench and waste the quality he has to offer.

Hannover’s reason for moving on was reportedly their preference to sign Knight on a free transfer, and with Cresswell still under contract at Elland Road until 2027, his services would command a small fee.

There is still plenty of time left in the summer window and it is important that the youngster does not rush into the wrong move. With the window set to officially open later this week, it is expected that several clubs who have been quiet until now will start considering moves for their targets.
