35-year-old man, killed after the car crashed into a tree

A 35-year-old man died when a car left a road and hit a tree, police have confirmed. A second man, over 30 years old, was transported to the hospital with injuries, another man was arrested on Monday evening at the scene of the tragedy.

The arrested man, who is also 35, was heard today on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit due to alcohol or drugs. Police have launched a major investigation and are appealing for witnesses.




Emergency services were called to a busy road near Wigan – Southworth Road, near Golborne Dale in Newton-le-Willows – at around 10.30pm on Monday. The area remained cordoned off by police this morning and the man who died has sadly not been named.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “We are investigating following a fatal road traffic collision in the Newton-le-Willows area last night, Monday 10 June. We were contacted at 10.30pm following reports of a white Ford Kuga traveling on Southwood Road in the direction of Church Street when it left the road and collided with a tree near the junction of Mere Road.

“A 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. A second man, aged in his 30s, was also injured. “Road closures are in place in the area while accident investigation work is carried out and motorists are advised to avoid the area.”

Detective Sergeant Andy Roper, from the force’s Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the man who sadly died.

“Enquiries are in the very early stages as we try to establish what happened and we are appealing for any motorists driving in the area of ​​Southwood Road who think they may have caught something on their dash cam to contact us. Investigation work is ongoing. and I would like to thank drivers and those who live locally for their patience while this important work is carried out.”
